Door Entry Systems are becoming increasingly popular as home security devices and are especially useful for elderly or disabled people, providing both security and peace of mind – by George Hall of Access Buzzers
There are many elderly people who could be discharged from hospital to return to a more independent life at home, but cannot do so because their home environment may not be suitable or provide the safe facilities for home care.
All caregivers face one inevitable question as they watch relatives age. How does the caregiver preserve the dignity and independence of their elderly relatives? They must weigh choices that balance care with safety and lifestyle freedom. Most elderly would prefer to "age in place" which is a reference to continued living in a non-healthcare environment, often their own home or relative's home. To compensate for the health issues caregivers look for products, services and conveniences to assist the elderly in their daily routine. This is often seen by the elderly as a more economical and more dignified way of living as they are not uprooted and isolated from friends and family.
One of the first products a caregiver should consider is an intercom system. How does the caregiver know when to start looking for an intercom system? It's certainly not after the person is disabled or hurt in a fall. The need for an intercom system comes at the first signs that aging is impairing the loved-one's quality of life.
The most vulnerable in our community are elderly people and that is why they are continually targeted by unscrupulous criminals. Every week we read about how people are abused in their homes as a result of opening their doors to strangers.
Many people don’t have a clue as to what type of intercom system they are looking for and many people think they are a bit too pretentious but everyone who has one now couldn’t live without one.
Like many new technologies, intercom systems have gone through numerous changes since first appearing on the market. While intercom systems were once utilized primarily by businesses and apartment buildings, they're commonly used for individual homes these days. As these systems have become more affordable over the years and have also added more and more options that have been useful for residential homes.
AUDIO Systems: This type allows audio only confirmation of visitors and remote door control into a property. They have an electronic chime call sound, metal door station mount, door release button and include an internal phone. They allow you to answer the door bell from your arm chair and let them in without moving from your chair.
VIDEO Systems: Improve home security through video entry systems to assist the elderly in identifying visitors before opening the door. Many elderly are unable to look through the peephole and have difficulty identifying individuals by voice.
The ability to see who is calling and the ability to hold a conversation with your visitor without going anywhere near your door always puts you in control of the situation.
If a criminal comes to your door and sees any intercom system the odds are that he or she will move on. Even if they don't you will be able to monitor your visitor and talk to them before making the decision to open your door. You can also review identification tags and if necessary make a phone call to ensure that your visitor is who they say they are. If the visitor is genuine they won't mind waiting.
All additional lines of security that can be added to your home will help you ensure the safety of your home and belongings, but more importantly, of yourself and your loved ones. Criminals these days hardly distinguish their prey, they do not care if you're a single mother with toddlers in the house, nor do they care if you are eight or nine months pregnant. Criminals are criminals who will enter and rob you regardless of your social standing. That is why; all homes must have a good security system in place.
